8 Days Basic Mediation Training( 2076, Shrawan)

In coordination and technical support of CWAD, Gokarneshwor Municipality has organized 8 days of basic mediation training to Ward Members, Ward Chair, Judicial Members and Paralegals, from 22nd Shrawan to 29th Shrawan, 2076 at Araniko Hotel, Dhulikhel. The objective of the training was to increase the legal knowledge of mediators, settle down the community dispute cases with the help of mediation, and increase access to justice to poor marginalized and disadvantaged groups. A total of 35 participants among which 29 were female and 6 were males participated in the 8 days of mediation training. The participate became skilled with dispute resolution through mediation, aware of roles and responsibilities, characteristics, norms, and ethics of mediators, learned techniques to handle the situations and provide access to justice to the community people.

During these 8 days (48 hours) basic mediation training participate were demonstrated with a small role-play the difference between conflict and dispute as well as how conflict convert into a dispute. Trainers alerted the participants/to be mediators has the jurisdiction to only resolution the Civil code cases at the local level, criminal cases such as rape and other cases related to criminal code need to be directed to the Court. The training topics included the role of mediators, responsibility and quality of a mediator, basic rules of negotiation, seven different steps in Mediation. The role-play in mediation training was very significant because that gave a clear view to the participants for further improvements. Therefore, facilitators continuously conducted numerous roles play exercises with the participants which reminded them to gain practical knowledge and amplify while mediation the cases. Through the role-play ZOPA, BATNA, WATNA, Dirty Tricks, participants were made to think about the benefit of everybody and the need to develop positive thinking.
